This is a biennial award for young people living in Warrandyte who hope to make their careers in the arts. The award aims to assist artists with outstanding potential for excellence and was established to mark Warrandyte's place in the history of Australian art.
The award is hosted by The Warrandyte Arts and Education Trust and the Lions Club of Warrandyte, the sole sponsor. Applicants are drawn from a wide selection of endeavours whether it be music, painting, handcrafts, singing or graphic design or indeed any pursuit which is broadly defined as a recognised art. The consideration is open to young adults aged from 18 to 25. A joint committee interviews applicants and arranges for up to three assessors proficient and well known in their respective fields to provide reports on each candidate. Assessments which show promise and potentially significant achievement form the finalists group.
Applications are sought from May to July every second year and is advertised in the Warrandyte Diary. The following six months allow for assessments to be made and the successful applicant is announced at the presentation dinner held in the following March coinciding with the Warrandyte Festival.
